preface

This book had its origins in the decision by the American Electroplaters' Society (AES) to sponsor courses at the Junior CoIlege or CoIlege level in Metal Finishing throughout the country, with the purpose of granting certification to those successfully completing such a course. Although some of the local Branches of the Society have sponsored such courses, they were independent of
each other and there could be no assurance that they were equivalent in content, nor that those taking the courses were receiving equivalent instruction. The AES wished to expand the program and to ensure that they would be at least approximately equivalent in content and in difficulty, so that all "graduates," no matter where they received their instruction, could truly claim to be familiar with the fundamentals of the technology. A further aim was to so structure the courses that they would be deserving of due credit toward a degree from the institution where they were taken.
It was soon realized that no satisfactory textbook in English for such a course was available, and the author was honored with the request to prepare such a text; this book is the result .

Electroplating and metal finishing is both an art and a science. Although based on several technologies and sciences, including chemistry, physics, chemical and electrical engineering, metaIlurgy, and perhaps others, it retains in some ways
the aspects of an art, in which experience is the only teacher. In fact, of course, all the sciences have elements of art which can be learned only by experience; all the reading of textbooks on chemistry will not produce a chemist. A fortiori, no text on electroplating will produce an expert electroplater; there is no substitute for experience and what is somewhat inelegantly termed know-how.

It is hoped that the book will be useful to at least two classes of readers: those with no background in the subject, who want an introduction which will be followed by practice; and those with some practical experience who may want to improve their skills by a deeper understanding of the science and technology behind their day-to-day practice . 

No one book, of course, can claim to offer complete instruction in all aspects of any subject as wide-ranging and as encompassing as metal finishing. Readers must recognize the necessity to supplement their use of this book with reading inallied fields. It is hoped that the bibliography which constitutes the final chapter will aid in directing the reader to such supplemental reading, but even that cannot claim to be complete. It goes without saying that awareness of current literature as presented in journals, and which no hardcover book can possibly cover, is an absolute requirement.

This has not been a one-man job. By the terms of the agreement between me and the AES, the latter appointed a review committee to pass upon each chapter,both as to general approach and as to accuracy of detail. This committee, whose personnel changed somewhat over the course of the project, was invaluable in catching occasional errors and offering suggestions for improvement. The book, however, is my responsibility; any remaining errors are mine.

It is hoped that the chapters in this book will speak for themselves; but several general statements belong here.

Metal finishing is a highly proprietary field; supply houses, large and small, offer patented or proprietary materials and processes for carrying out almost all the operations covered. The reader should be aware that publication of formulas or methods in this book carries with it no implication whether the material so discussed is the subject of a U.S. or foreign patent. Anyone planning to practice,on anything but an experimental and noncommercial scale  the processes dicussed should take whatever steps are deemed appropriate to guard oneself against legal action

مقدمه

گردآوری این کتاب توسط انجمن آبکاری (AES) با حمایت و پشتیبانی دانشگاه جونیور و انجمن دانشگاهی متال فینیشینگ انجام شده است هدف از جمع آوری و تدوین این کتاب آموزش آبکاری به صورت تخصصی و سپس اعطای گواهینامه ی مربوط به این رشته به کسانی که این دوره را با موفقیت سپری می کنند . هرچند دوره هایی در زمینه آبکاری به طور مستقل ارائه می گردد اما هیچ تضمین اجرایی برای کارآموزان بعد از سپری نمودن این دوره ها وجود ندارد اما این مجموعه و گروهی که به جمع آوری اطلاعات آبکاری پرداخته اند یک گروه کاملا علمی می باشند که در واقع به نوعی ضمانت اجرایی این دوره ها می باشند .

این مجموعه بهترین و جامع ترین کتاب به زبان انگلیسی در زمینه ی رشته ی آبکاری می باشند آبکاری در واقع یک علم توام با هنر می باشد به طوریکه دانش فنی این صنعت نشان داده است که مجموعه ای از علوم شیمی ، فیزیک ، برق و متالورژی می باشد.

در واقع همه ی علوم به نوعی با هنر در ارتباط می باشند و این اصل را تنها با تجربه و کار عملی می توان درک کرد با این وجود حامیان مالی این کتاب و نویسنده ی کتاب با عنوان ویل بر این باور هستند که تجربه به تنهایی کافی نیست به ویژه در جامعه ی کنونی و با پیشرفت تکنولوژی و روی کار آمدن فناوری های نو حتما باید سطح دانش را به نوعی بالا برد و می دانیم که علم آبکاری نیز از این اصل مبرا نیست و این کتاب می تواند ما را در رسیدن به این دانش فنی در صنعت آبکاری یاری رساند .

امید است این کتاب برای خوانندگان مفید باشد و به خوبی بتواند مفاهیم و اصول را معرفی نماید .

این کتاب سعی نموده است که مفاهیم را به صورت پایه ای و ابتدایی برای کسانی که هیچ تجربه ای در زمینه ی آبکاری نداشته اند و حتی برای کسانی که با هدف بالا بردن سطح دانش و مهارت های فنی خود در زمینه ی آبکاری به مطالعه ی این کتاب می پردازند مفید واقع شود .

یکی دیگر از مواردی که در این کتاب بررسی شده است خطوط آبکاری الکتریکی به طور تخصصی می باشد .

سایر مباحث مورد بررسی عبارتند از : زمینه ی قطعات و آماده سازی سطوح ، بحث اقتصادی ، جنبه ی شیمیایی مواد ، نوع فلز ، نوع پوشش و خواص آن .

در حقیقت عملیات آبکاری را به صورت کاملا علمی و تخصصی مورد بررسی قرار داده است .

کمیته ی AES پیشنهادات مفیدی را جهت بهبود کیفیت کار و پوشش دهی در این کتاب ارائه داده است امید است که این کتاب کمکی به رشد  و توسعه ی صنعت آبکاری به طور قابل توجهی نموده است .

همچنین به خطرات ناشی از استفاده ی مواد شیمیایی نیز اشاره شده است و در رابطه با اصول ایمنی و مقررات آن نیز به طور مفصل بحث شده است فرض بر این است که خواننده هیچ نوع آشنایی ای با این مواد و خطرات ناشی از آن ندارد و کلیه ی اقدامات احتیاطی و ایمنی لازم در برخورد با مواد سمی ، مواد منفجره و خطرات ناشی از تجهیزات مکانیکی و الکتریکی همگی توضیح داده شده است .

یکی دیگر از موارد مورد بحث در این کتاب کاهش آلودگی ها ، شرایط کار و ایمنی محل کار می باشد بحث زیست محیطی از دیگر مباحثی است که در این صنعت باید به آن توجه زیادی نمود در پایان این کتاب جدول تبدیل واحدها آمده است همچنین استاندارد Astm E380  نیز یک راهنمای کامل و معتبر می باشد که در این کتاب معرفی شده است .
